If you are launching your first course, the honest answer is Systeme.io — not because it is the best platform, but because it is the only one of the four that lets you find out whether anyone will buy before you start paying. That distinction matters more than any feature list.

The thing that changed in 2026
Most beginner guides still tell you to "start on the free plan." That advice is now two years out of date for three of the four major platforms:
- Teachable removed its free plan in June 2025. You now get 7 days.
- Thinkific's free tier has become a 30-day trial with one course, not a permanent plan.
- Podia has no free plan either — 30 days, then $42/month at minimum.
- Systeme.io still has a genuinely permanent free plan: 2,000 contacts, one course, three funnels, unlimited emails, no credit card, no expiry.
So for a beginner, the field has quietly narrowed. If you want to build and launch before paying anything, there is exactly one option left.
What it actually costs to sell your first $1,000
Say you charge $197 and sell five courses in a month — $985 in revenue. Here is what each platform's cheapest plan leaves you with, billed annually, card processing included:

The gap between the best and worst option here is about $103 a month, or roughly $1,234 over a year — on a business doing under $1,000 a month. That gap is not the subscription. It is the percentage cut that Teachable Starter and Podia Mover take from every sale, which is the line most comparison articles leave out entirely.
The trap inside that table
Look at Teachable again. Its cheapest plan is not its cheapest plan. At five sales of $197, Starter costs you $29 in subscription plus $73.88 in platform cut — $132.94 all in. Builder costs $69 and takes nothing from your sales: $99.07 all in. The plan that looks $40 more expensive is $33.88 a month cheaper the moment you sell anything.
Podia works the same way: at this volume Shaker ($114.07) beats Mover ($121.32), even though Mover is the one advertised as the entry price. Percentage fees invert the ranking as soon as volume shows up, and the crossover happens far earlier than most people expect.

When a beginner should not pick Systeme.io
Being free does not make it right for you. Skip it if any of these describe you:
- Your course needs certificates or real exams. Systeme.io's assessment tools are basic. Go to Thinkific ($40/month billed annually), which does exams, enforced lesson completion and formal certificates properly, with unlimited courses even on its base plan.
- Your students will learn on their phones. Systeme.io has no native student app — browser only. Teachable includes one on every plan, though its cheapest plan takes 7.5% of each sale and caps you at 100 active students.
- You want a community more than a course. Podia includes community on every plan and is the simplest of the four to run. Watch the 5% cut on Mover and the 100-subscriber email cap.
- Presentation is your product. Systeme.io's course player and page editor look plainer than Teachable's or Thinkific's. If you sell a premium-priced course to a design- literate audience, that matters.
The mistake that actually costs money
It is not picking the "wrong" platform. All four of these will host a course and take a payment. The expensive mistake is paying for scale you do not have yet — a $164/month plan with six admin seats and three communities, for a course with eleven students.
Start on the cheapest plan that does the job. Every one of these platforms makes upgrading trivial and downgrading awkward, which tells you which direction they would like you to move in. Move up when the revenue makes the decision obvious, not before.
A note on migrating later
People avoid free plans because they fear migrating later. Moving one course with a handful of students is a weekend of re-uploading videos. Moving forty courses with two thousand enrolled students is a project. So the risk of starting cheap is at its lowest exactly when you are a beginner — which is the opposite of how it is usually framed.
So: what should you do
- If you have not validated demand yet, start free on Systeme.io. Build the course, sell it, find out if anyone wants it.
- If you need certificates or serious assessments, go straight to Thinkific and pay the $40. Nothing cheaper does this job properly.
- If your audience is mobile-first, weigh Teachable's student app against its 7.5% cut — at low volume the cut is small; at $5,000 a month it is $375.
- Whatever you pick, check the current price on their site before you enter a card. These pages change quietly, and ours is only as fresh as the date at the top.
